When I Grow Up

The minute we were born our parents thought about who we will be in the future. In Kindergarten on Career’s Day, we wear clothing reflecting our desired profession and this trend is taken into primary school. The question is frequently asked, “What would you like to be when you grow up?” This is a very essential question as the answer will guide you in acknowledging the things you really like to do versus those you do not and the steps you need to take to achieve your goals to become what you desire to be. Let’s talk about five reasons we should work hard or have a knowledge of what we would like to become.

Independence – knowing your desired profession shows a form of independence. It means you know exactly what you want for you even more so, why. Often times we achieve dreams that are not our own and this can make us depend on others more than we really should. Get to know yourself more so that you will be able to be more dependent on yourself.
Help others- Whatever we decide to become should not only benefit us but benefit others. Often times we hear the phrase “no man is an island and no man stands alone.” This phrase is true in its entirety. Whatever our profession is when we work someone else benefits. This is why the work we do must be one after our own hearts.
Money – Cha-ching! I will not ignore the fact that money does push individuals to work harder. People like to be comfortable and money tends to bring about some form of comfortability. While our true passion may not bring about the sum of money our hearts desire to advance in that field can allow the flow of more income. Everybody works because they need money; money they will use to get the things they need and want.

Purpose- knowing what you want to achieve gives you a sense of purpose. Purpose to me means a drive to achieve what you were created to do. When we know what we want to become then it gives us a sense of purpose that guides us as we work towards it. Attaining this goal will give you a form of achievement resulting in positive rewards and reinforcements for you.
Keeps us busy – the devil finds work for idle hands. Work keeps us busy, less bored and definitely out of trouble. When you have a task to do it helps you to remain focused in order to finish it. You will therefore be doing something productive than wasting time doing nothing and feeling worthless.

There is no age range for “when you grow up”. If you believe that you have wasted your teenage years and you cannot become who you wanted to be then you are wrong. Whatever age you are you can still become what your heart desires. Don’t let pride or shame keep you away from becoming your best self. Know that within you lies a big POTENTIALITY and you can become anything you hope to be whenever the time comes.
