“What does it mean to live a purpose-filled life?” This is a question that has been asked by philosophers, scholars, and ordinary people alike for centuries. At its core, I believe that living a purpose-filled life means finding meaning and fulfilment in your existence and using your unique skills and talents to contribute positively to the world around you. Over the years, I have been determined to find my purpose, create new experiences, and prioritise relationships. These three things, I believe, are the keys to living a purpose-filled life.
Finding your purpose is a deeply personal journey that requires introspection and self-awareness. It’s not something that can be found outside of yourself, but rather something that comes from within. The first step to living a purpose-filled life is understanding yourself, your values, and what truly matters to you. After years of searching, I have come to realise that my sole purpose is to live for Christ. In Christ, I have found my true identity and have come to know myself. This has not always been the case, because as a teenager, I struggled with low self-esteem and self-awareness. Getting to know myself has helped me to own my skills and talents and use them to glorify God. Once you have a better understanding of yourself, it’s important to think about how you can use your skills and talents to make a positive impact on the world. This can be through your career, your hobbies, or volunteering in your community. When you use your strengths to contribute to something greater than yourself, you feel a sense of purpose and fulfilment that is hard to replicate in any other way.
Living a purpose-filled life also means being open to new experiences and opportunities. It’s easy to fall into a rut and become complacent in our daily routines rather than trying new things. In 2018, I decided to step outside my comfort zone to pursue personal and professional growth and fulfilment, by leaving my home country of Jamaica to live and teach in Kuwait - a Muslim country. The funny thing about this new experience is that God did not allow me to just grow personally and professionally, but the spiritual growth has been unimaginable. This experience has been what I truly needed to fully walk in my purpose. So, whether taking a class, travelling to a new place, or learning a new skill, opening yourself up to new experiences can help you discover new passions and interests.
Another important aspect of living a purpose-filled life is prioritizing relationships and connections with others. Humans are social creatures, and we thrive on meaningful relationships with others. Taking the time to nurture these relationships and build connections with others can bring a sense of purpose and meaning to our lives. There are groups at my church that we call connection groups. In these small groups, we meet to discuss the word of God and share experiences and testimonies. Also, there is always food! But these meetings are so empowering that I have never left one feeling the same way I did when I had just arrived. This is me being intentional about relationships. Whether it’s spending time with family, volunteering with a community organisation, or simply taking the time to connect with a friend, investing in relationships can bring a sense of joy and fulfilment to our lives. My family and friends, both in Jamaica and in Kuwait, have been my rock, and I have made the decision to be intentional about maintaining these relationships.
In conclusion, living a purpose-filled life is about finding meaning and fulfilment in your existence, and using your unique skills and talents to make a positive impact on the world. It requires self-awareness, being open to new experiences, and investing in relationships. By living a purpose-filled life, you can create a sense of fulfilment and happiness that is hard to find in any other way.
