Embracing the New Norm: Reengagement in Physical School

Many individuals have been having mixed feelings about returning to the physical school setting. Students are happy because they want to leave the house and see their friends that they have not seen for almost two years. Parents are a bit worried if students will adhere to the protocols but are elated that they can have face to face learning. Teachers may be a bit nervous as results of students’ academic success will be more accurate through face to face testing. Principals desire for things to run smoothly so that there will be no outbreak resulting in the closure of their schools. Everyone just wants to get back on track. Let’s discuss five things to remember while we venture into the new norm of a physical school setting.

Wear a mask – the mask is now a very important piece of clothing that completes our attire. Thus, all students, teachers, parents and other stakeholders who enter the school compound MUST be wearing a mask. The mask acts as a shield barring off any fluid that may be dispersed into the air when someone speaks, coughs or sneezes.

Keep yuh distance – it is important that students, teachers, parents and other stakeholders practice keeping their distance. Students are extremely loving and tend to want to hug their teachers so they have to be constantly reminded that the virus is still alive and active. The ideal social distance is 6 feet but 3 feet apart is acceptable. Once you extend your hand in front or behind you and you are not touching anyone then you are considered social distance safe.

Wash hands regularly – washing hands has always been good hygienic practice but should be more exercised now that students are at school. Students should not share their personal items with each other and MUST wash their hands before and after lunch and after using the bathroom. Sanitisers can be used in between sessions when they have touched their desks, doorknobs or grills at school. If hands are visibly dirty students should wash their hands immediately.

Think positively – School can be hard especially now. We have to remain positive and try our best to get back in the mode of learning. Online school can be good but many students were left behind for several reasons beyond anyone’s control. Some students have no self-confidence and think that they are too slow to get back on track. In order to receive positive results, we must think positively.

Take your time- Do not burden yourself with the extreme demands that physical school will bring. Remember that you are not the only one going through this experience. Talk to someone if you feel as though you are under pressure and cannot cope. Take the time you need to regroup if needs be.

It will take a lot of time and effort to get back into the groove of face to face teaching and learning. Despite all of this we must do what Marcus Garvey said: “lose not courage, lose not faith, go forward.”
