Life is described as a journey; sometimes rough and patchy and other times smooth and straight. On this journey we have many green lights viewed as victories and red lights described as obstacles. There are several things people deem as obstacles each carrying their own weight from person to person. Depression is a common medical issue that affects the emotions, changing the way we feel and think in a negative way. There are many reasons people become depressed; some persons aren’t even aware that they are. Today we will discuss five tips that we can help us to deal with depression.

Pray- Prayer is a way to talk to God as we talk to a friend. Sharing what we are feeling with God is important as he sincerely cares and is listening to you. Not everyone believes in Him; some may believe in a higher power or even the universe. Whatever the belief, believe that the path you are on will only build you to be stronger than ever before. Every beginning has an end therefore the troubles won’t last forever. Remind yourself that there was a time before now that you were not depressed and you can be at that place again.
Communicate with a trusted individual- Whenever something is wrong communicating with others is one of the first options we should consider. Expressing the way you feel when something unfortunate happens helps to ease the pain. Talking to someone you trust may open avenues for solutions to your issue and if there are no clear solutions in sight at least you won’t be carrying such a heavy burden anymore.
Surround yourself with family- There is no doubt that the first mode of socialization is the family. As time evolves our definition of family also evolves. Our family can be our relatives or close friends who we are extremely attached to. Whenever you feel depressed and you make an effort to be around your family it gives a sense of belongingness and the state of extreme stress disappears. Be sure to share what you are feeling with them so they can help to support you through this process. If you aren’t aware that you are depressed a family member will notice the difference in your behaviour and I am sure they will ask if you are okay. Do not say “I’m good” take the opportunity to speak and get the help you need.
Notice positive things- Since depression alters the way we feel and think then we should make deliberate effort to notice the positive things in each day and celebrate them. I understand that sometimes depression may drain your soul and clouds your mind from noticing the positive things happening but there is always something positive happening. Noticing one positive thing can improve your mood even for that moment and you’ll only be reminding yourself that the tough times won’t last as long as you find beauty within the mess.
Seek professional help- this is encouraged as severe depression can lead to death. Be honest about everything you are experiencing and be detailed in your description. State what you feel and hold nothing back. This is the only way the professional can help to relieve you of problems.

The road of depression can be extremely dark and lonely, thus should not be taken lightly. If you notice changes in yourself or in your friends behaviour consider these tips. You can only receive the help you need by taking the first step. Take care of you!
