As an educator, entrepreneur, and dedicated community builder, Mrs. Monique Bailey-Allen works diligently to impact people’s lives through her gifts and talents. She was born in New Longville, Clarendon, where she grew with her siblings, parent, and grandparent. She attended the Edwin Allen High School and matriculated to the Mico University College, where she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Education (Family and Consumer Science).
Among her academic and professional successes, Monique founded a charity called “Team Allen and Friends Initiative.” The initiative was birth out of her love for children and her passion for community service. She also aims to touch people’s lives through her company, “Monel’s Unique Touch.”
Ambitious, humble, intelligent, and gifted are words fitting to describe Mrs. Monique Bailey-Allen, who is guided by the scripture “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Monique embraces the view that it is better to try and fail than fail to try.
Jamaica Education Magazine is grateful to have asked Monique five questions, and we hope that the answers Monique provided will challenge you to “transform your crazy dreams into great ideas.” Enjoy!
1. Tell us a little about your professional journey.
Over the years, I have served in different capacities as a professional. I am truly grateful for the path my professional journey has taken, as these opportunities have helped to mold me into the multitalented young lady I am today. My professional journey started at the Clarendon Parish Library as a Library Assistant. In addition, I have done a summer internship at the Victoria Mutual Building Society, Probation Office, and I did brand promotion for the company.
After leaving university, I worked with the National Youth Service, Clarendon Parish Development Committee Benevolent, and the Clarendon Municipal Cooperation. After many unsuccessful job applications to schools, in 2020, I was blessed with the opportunity to work at the Windsor School of Special Education (Spanish Town Unit) for eight months as a Home Economics Teacher. Upon completing my tenure, I was interviewed and had to opportunity to stay and teach Art and Craft/Soft Furnishing. I aim to make an indelible mark on my students by equipping them with the necessary tools to aid in the growth and development of themselves and the nation.
Everyone’s journey has its unique path, but at the end of the day, we should ensure that we make a positive mark at every step of the way. I strongly encourage young people to capitalize on the summer job opportunities because they can garner valuable work ethic and experience that will be an asset in their future endeavors.

2. What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
My entrepreneurial journey began while in college. I was driven by the need for finances to help with my college expenses. During this time at the Mico University College, I was known for selling snacks, altering clothes, and making hats, which was a new gift I discovered at the time. The revenue from these ventures assisted me immensely in funding the daily expenses and gave me a sense of independence. The hardships I faced in life have propelled me to create my own source of income, and I have no regrets. From this experience, the entrepreneurial passion was realized, and I decided to establish myself and hone my craft. Additionally, the Lord has deposited so many skills and talents in me, and I see entrepreneurship as a great way to keep those gifts alive.
3. What advice do you have for educators who would like to become an entrepreneur?
With the daily increase in the cost of living, the need for multiple income streams has become more necessary than ever. Entrepreneurship is a viable option to help supplement your income; therefore, it is worth the effort, and I often tell people that there is always someone willing to purchase your goods. Many of us are sitting on great skills and talents. So, try to find your passion and start small until you establish yourself. Start by modeling your brand, then market yourself, and become a registered entity.
4. Tell us about Monel’s Unique Touch, the services offered, and how interested persons can access these services.

Monel’s Unique Touch is owned and operated by myself and my husband, Helton Allen. With this structure in place, we were able to group all of our skills and talents under one umbrella. 5. What is the primary goal of the “Team Allen and Friends Initiative,” and how has it been impacting your community?
This initiative was birth out of the love my husband and I have for children and our passion for community service. We have always dreamt of helping others and making a difference in our community, and this platform has created the perfect opportunity. Since the charity started in 2012, over 100 children from the community are blessed every December or January with gift packages. “Team Allen and Friends” aims to spread love and positivity within the community so that the children can feel a sense of care and appreciation. Therefore, every year my husband and I work assiduously to secure contributions from friends and sponsors. This project is hosted in association with our home church Bethel Temple Apostolic. What started with just contributions from a few friends and my small paycheque while working at the library has blossomed into a blessing with sponsorships from companies and friends. The smiles on the children’s faces bring much fulfillment, and it is our desire to see this initiative grow from strength to strength.
