The Education Jamaica Magazine got the opportunity to ask Melisa Dunkley-Smith five questions, and her genuine passion for inspiring was reflected in her answers. We hope you will find her story as a reminder that you are strong and full of potential. Enjoy the read!
1. What inspired you to become an author?
My inspiration comes from my desire to help women navigate through the stormy seasons of life. In January 2020, a close friend messaged me to say that she was on the verge of giving up. After reaching out to her with encouraging words and prayers, she had a new perspective on life. She later expressed her gratitude and how our encounter changed her life, and that was a WOW moment for me. That was the confirmation that women’s empowerment is indeed my calling.
2. What is most fulfilling about being an author?
The most fulfilling thing about being an author is the testimonies about how women’s lives have been changed and the gratification of knowing that I am making an impact.

3. Tell us about your book “Strong Girl, Get Up” and how interested people can access it?
“Strong Girl, Get Up” is a 21-day devotional written to help women overcome adversity. It is an easy read; each day begins with a scripture, followed by stories and lessons from personal experiences, and ends with a story of strength from a woman in the bible. If you have been feeling heavy-laden, depressed, or broken, sister, you are not alone. Let us face it, life is hard sometimes, and as such, this devotional was deliberately penned to help women remain focused and regain their strength, knowing that whatever it is they are going through, they can overcome because their strength comes from God. 4. How do you create a balance between being a mother and an author, among other roles and responsibilities?
Balance is important, especially when you wear many hats.
1. ESTABLISH PRIORITIES - this is very important to me; I set priorities. I never always get everything done, but I believe strongly in ‘progression, not perfection.’ I usually do my most important or most urgent tasks first, and then I focus on the others. Scheduling time for family activities is also a must.
2. TAKE BREAKS - This is how I replenish and rejuvenate. As the saying goes, “you can’t pour from an empty cup,” so I take time for self and soul care. My self-care usually involves a new hairdo, a deep clean facial, and anything that lightens my mood. My soul care includes quiet time with God and journaling.
3. JOIN A COMMUNITY - I cannot stress the importance of having a tribe. No man is an island, and no man stands alone. It is an awesome feeling to be a part of a community of high achievers who want to see me be the same. It is also important that we share the same values, so we eat, pray, and slay together.
5. What is your advice to mothers who might be afraid to go after their goals?
Shun fear and do it anyway! There will be a point where we have to step out of our own ways and allow God to take complete control. My advice to all moms is to face those fears and go after their dreams; you may have had a setback, but you have the willpower to overcome anything life throws at you. Strong mom, walk out in confidence and claim your crown because God did not give you a spirit of fear but of power, love, and of a sound mind.
